Frequently Asked Questions

Is solar pool heating dependable?

As long as that big ball of gas we call the sun keeps shining, you can depend on solar energy as a reliable technology. Solar pool heating is nothing new – Aquatherm Industries systems have been operating worldwide for over 30 years heating pools, hot tubs, spas, municipal and commercial pools, hotels and resort clubs, making swimming seasons longer, more comfortable and environmentally friendly.

How does the cost of Sunlite™ Solar compare with other pool heating options?

While installation costs are comparable to conventional fossil fuel heaters, there are zero operating costs, so a Sunlite system will pay for itself in as little as two years. After that, you’ll be collecting dividends year after year as you swim longer and more comfortably with the sun’s endless supply of free energy.

The chart above shows how operating costs can add up over time. Since fossil fuel heaters have many moving parts and require constant maintenance, their average lifespan is shorter than that of a solar system. The sharp increases in Heat Pump and Natural Gas / Propane Heaters represent the purchase of replacement units.

Is a solar pool heater simple to operate?

Yes! Using your exising pool pump, water is circulated through the many small passages of the solar collector, where it is warmed by the sun. This warm water then flows directly back to your pool through the regular pool plumbing. Systems can be controlled manually or with an optional automatic controller. Sunlite™ Solar Pool Heaters are designed to work with your existing filtration equipment as well as the latest in pool automation technology.

What if I already have a gas heater or heat pump?

A Sunlite™ Solar Pool Heater can also work alongside your existing conventional heater. A “hybrid pool heating system” uses solar as the primary source of heat, and any existing gas or electric heater as a backup if necessary. With a hybrid pool heating system, you truly get the best of both worlds.

Do the collectors have to face south and be mounted on my roof?

No, not necessarily. Though SunliteCollectors are generally roof mounted, they can be installed anywhere they will receive sunlight a good portion of the day (6-8 hours). Depending on the angle of the mounting surface, east- and west-facing systems can function equally as well as true south-facing.
